Designing Xamarin

And setting the tone for high-quality mobile development tools as a design generalist.

Xamarin is a software company founded in 2011 by Nat Friedman and Miguel de Icaza. Xamarin focused on high-quality tools for mobile, cross-platform developers. It enabled C# developers to write native Android and iOS apps with native UI.

About

I joined Xamarin in early 2012 as their first designer, and remained in a focused, compact team. There I could call myself a generalist. I worked creating its brand identity, designing and implementing marketing websites, and developing compelling UI for web apps.

Joining Xamarin was one of the most impactful life choices I’ve made, and I’m grateful for the experience I had there.

What you see here is a little bit of my work in the four years I worked at Xamarin with so many talented people.

In 2016 Xamarin was acquired by Microsoft.

Brand and marketing pages

Joining early, I had the opportunity to contribute with the company look and feel and define the brand’s identity. Xamarin was in an inspiring position: it provided native cross-platform tools that truly embraced native user experiences. This level of care in creating software became the inspiration to establish how a developer brand should present itself.

Developer experiences

I had the opportunity to design most of our developer-oriented websites at Xamarin, and even hand-craft several special frontend interactions. Guides, API References and documentation shared light shapes and friendly typography throughout.

Web applications

When the company started investing in testing and analytics tools, we extended our development focus to the web, and I defined the design language for our new web apps.

I worked on Xamarin Test Cloud, Xamarin Insights, and a few other smaller projects.

I’m gathering screenshots and detailed pieces to add to this page in the future. :-)
